It's safe to say we're a little bit obsessed with James at BYS HQ. Not only is he a super-strong, world class athlete and absolute rig, he's also one of the nicest humans you'll ever meet!
If you're in the CrossFit space you've likely heard of James and know a little about what he's achieved, but we sat down and dug a little bit deeper into where he's been, and what's next from here.
What got you into CrossFit?
I had a friend message me and tell me that CrossFit would make me better at my football, and at the time I just wanted to be as good as I possibly could.
I stumbled into the CrossFit gym and was absolutely annihilated by the workout, and I thought whatever this thing is, I have to do more of it.
Was pursuing CrossFit professionally on the world stage a goal you set early on? Or was there a certain moment in your training where you realised you could be onto something good?!
It definitely wasn’t on the cards when I first walked in. I grew to enjoy the training and competition side of things after about a month into it. But even after 6 months I was thinking about a career in CrossFit. It wasn’t until I placed 9th in 2012 regionals that I thought yup… I’m in!
Do you prefer cardio or weight training?
Give me a cardio workout any day of the week!
And do you prefer to hit the gym in the AM or PM?
I’m definitely an AM trainer.
What’s the heaviest you’ve ever lifted?
The heaviest lift I've ever done is a 260 kg deadlift.
What’s your biggest achievement professionally?
Placing 5th at the CrossFit Games. It kind of just felt like an accumulation of nine years of competing, like the nine years of effort had all been worthwhile.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve gotten to do/see/experience while traveling for competitions?
Competing in the CrossFit invitational in Melbourne was probably one of the coolest comps I’ve done. Throwing down with my Aussie buddies and winning was freaking wild.
What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you? Any party tricks, weird phobias, or hidden talents?
I can sleep absolutely anywhere, anytime! I also love Dragon Ball.
Do you prefer hot or iced coffee?
Cold for sure. Iced Coffee all day long.
And last but not least, what’s your favourite BYS blend?
My favourite Beforeyouspeak blend is the Performance Coffee. We've got focus, we've got no crash and it tastes freaking wild.
