Yoga in the Workplace

Yoga in the Workplace

In the modern world, workplace stress has become the new norm. We are constantly pushing ourselves to meet that deadline, land a deal or finish a big project. But, we give little thought to just how much this stress could be affecting our wellbeing and performance in every aspect of life.

Individuals that face psychological stressors are at risk of having their work performance impaired, in addition, stress is also a major factor contributing to certain musculoskeletal disorders. For example, back pain, shoulder and neck tension, eye strain, headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome. Imagine this; you are constantly stationary at your desk, day-in and day-out, it’s finally time to clock off and you haven’t moved from your seat all day, your back begins to cramp, tension forms in your neck and you begin to feel a sharp pain in your forehead. For many, this is what the next 50 years of work will look like. However, by introducing Yoga into your workday for at least 60-minutes a week can greatly improve your mental health and wellbeing.

Here at Beforeyouspeak, we are constantly sitting at our desks hard at work, or in the warehouse packing orders — so we introduced a weekly Yoga class for all team members. Yoga can release stress, muscular tension and pain whilst also teaching you how to use relaxation techniques to help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and reduce insomnia.

Yoga increases your body's levels of oxytocin which helps create a connection with those around you and having a team that’s connected is important to running our business. We have found that since beginning yoga, the team has been happier, healthier and more relaxed than ever, including an increase in workplace performance.

Studies show that by incorporating 60 minutes of yoga a week into your work schedule will help improve mood, wellbeing, composure, energy, clear-mindedness, confidence and satisfaction. It has also helped create feelings of greater self-confidence during stressful situations.

With increasing work demands, stepping away from the computer screen and into a new environment allows the body to relax and unwind. This can help improve your creativity and drive within the workplace. Our employees physical and mental wellbeing is at the forefront of our minds and through the incorporation of yoga, we are able to help remove a little bit of stress each week.
