L-Tyrosine, Zinc and Fulvic Minerals: Your Energy, Focus & Brain Function boosters

L-Tyrosine, Zinc and Fulvic Minerals may not be at the top of everyone’s supplement wish list. But what if the trio could help give you an energy boost, sharpen your mind and improve your overall cognitive function?

We asked Bec Miller, host of Body Bites with Bec and founder of Health with Bec, to tell us why she thinks each of these three powerful ingredients are important to include in our diets.

Bec is a clinical nutritionist who specialises in weight loss, particularly for women who have “tried it all” and are desperate to slim down, reduce the bloat and end the yo-yo dieting – without the hunger.

Zinc

Zinc supports a number of functions in your body! It enables you to make proteins and DNA, helps to reduce oxidative stress, is critical for the development and function of immune cells, reduces the levels of certain inflammatory proteins in your body, and may boost cognitive function.
Oxidative stress leads to chronic inflammation, a causal factor in a wide range of chronic illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, and mental decline, so reducing this by consuming adequate zinc is vital.
Some evidence suggests that zinc may boost cognitive function (ie brain function!) In a randomized controlled study (the gold standard in science) performed in 2019 on teenage girls, supplementation of zinc was found to be effective in improving their cognitive performance.
This makes sense, as it is an essential trace element for brain health, a deficiency would impact concentration and memory. As it is very easy to be deficient in zinc if you don’t concentrate on eating zinc rich foods, the extra supplementation may help ensure your levels are always met!

L-Tyrosine
L-tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid, meaning that you don't have to get it from food to meet your needs. Although most people don’t need to take L-tyrosine as your body can produce ample amounts itself, supplementing with extra may be beneficial in helping you perform in stressful situations and staying mentally sharp when you have lost sleep (hell yes!).
In several studies that have been undertaken, those taking l-tyrosine experienced less processing problems or memory deficits than would normally occur in stressful situations such as a difficult task at work.

In one study where subjects were kept awake for more than 24 hours, those who took l-tyrosine performed far better on two types of tasks than those who took a placebo. The effect lasted around three hours! In a world where lots of us seem to get inadequate sleep, this is definitely a plus!

Fulvic Minerals
Fulvic acid is said to be a humic substance, meaning that it’s a naturally occurring compound found in soils, compost and marine sediments. Research suggests that it may boost your body's defence against illnesses, fight inflammation and enhance antioxidant activity — all of which improve your immune health.
What’s more, is that it may boost your energy by boosting cellular function! Animal research demonstrates that fulvic minerals may preserve the function of mitochondria, which is the energy-producing organelle inside all of your cells! Some animal-based research also suggests that they may help enhance memory.
